What is Postpartum Care?

Postpartum care is structured, in-home support during the first days and weeks after birth—when your baby’s feeding, development, and overall wellbeing are being established.

Certified Postpartum Care Providers, trained by the PostPartum Academy South Africa, support both mother and baby during this transition.

Services include:

  • Guidance on newborn care, feeding, and early development
  • Hands-on breastfeeding and feeding support
  • Monitoring of baby’s wellbeing and early signs of challenges
  • Support for maternal recovery and rest
  • Practical, in-home help in the early days
  • Guidance for partners on how to support effectively
  • Ongoing reassurance and confidence-building

Mother and newborn

Support shouldn’t be optional after birth

Most mothers in South Africa navigate the first few weeks after birth with very little structured support. While family support is invaluable, it doesn’t replace trained, professional care for recovery, feeding, and newborn wellbeing in those critical early days.

In countries like Netherlands, Postpartum care is a standard part of healthcare. Research shows that early, hands-on support improves breastfeeding success and helps identify challenges before they become overwhelming.

Ubuntu Mama brings that same level of intentional, professional support to mothers in South Africa—so you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Train to become a certified Postpartum Care Provider

The PostPartum Academy South Africa offers in-depth, structured training — both theoretical and practical — to prepare you as a certified Postpartum Care Provider (PPCP). Once certified, you’ll be added to the Ubuntu Mama network, where you can opt in to be matched with families looking for care.

Benefits:

Our mission

Ubuntu Mama was born from my own experience. I’m Munawwar, a South African living in the Netherlands, where I had both my babies. After each birth, I received daily in-home postpartum care—support that guided me through feeding, recovery, and those overwhelming early days. It changed everything. I felt supported, informed, and able to recover in a way I didn’t even realise was possible. And I saw that this wasn’t a luxury—it was a standard part of care for every mother.

Back home in South Africa, many women don’t even know this kind of support exists. They rely on family, do their best, and push through—but often without the guidance they truly need in those critical early days. Ubuntu Mama exists to change that. We’re here to build awareness of postpartum care and why it matters—for both mother and baby. We’re growing a trusted network of trained Postpartum Care Providers, helping establish this as a recognised and respected profession in South Africa.

Because our vision is simple:

A future where every mother has access to the support she needs after birth - because when more women are supported, and more women are empowered to provide care, entire communities are strengthened.

Proudly South African
